Linda Kits-Mägi

21.11.2026–04.04.2027

On 21 November the Tartu Art Museum will open an exhibition dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Linda Kits-Mägi, a prominent painter of the Pallas school.

Linda Kits-Mägi was one of the few female graduates of the Pallas Art School who, despite the changing circumstances of the 20th century, managed to work as a freelance artist and continue making art. In 1943, when Linda graduated from Pallas, the school already bore a new name – the Tartu Higher Courses of Fine Arts – but the Pallas spirit was still present in the school. We can see and feel in Linda Kits-Mägi’s art throughout the years a clearly Pallas-esque manner of painting.

Both flower compositions and landscapes are present in Linda’s paintings, but no less important are her intimate interiors and portraits. We also have numerous paintings of the artist’s family, especially of Linda’s children.

Linda Kits-Mägi’s first significant personal exhibition took place in 1960 in the Tartu Art Museum. That exhibition, which can be considered seminal in Linda’s career, would not be her last, in Tartu or elsewhere. In 2026 we are celebrating the 110th anniversary of Linda Kits-Mägi’s birth and on this occasion, after a period of almost 40 years, the Tartu Art Museum will once again host an exhibition of the works of this artist who played an important role in the artistic life of Tartu.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the first comprehensive catalogue on Linda Kits-Mägi’s work since 1960, with a wide selection of reproductions of works from both museum and private collections.
